Our Dirt

Terroir- Expressed by the unique aspects of Place, People and Time.

Geology

Our vineyard is a unique blend of ancient and recent geology. At the deepest level, varved clay from glacial lakes provides steady moisture to the vine roots. Above this lies silt loam and iron-rich red river sand, once part of the surrounding peaks, transported by the Ausable River over time. The 700-foot width of our property showcases significant variations in soil composition, reflecting the dynamic history of the Adirondacks. These free-draining top soils reduce humidity, limiting disease, while the deeper clay provides essential moisture during droughts—ideal for growing vines.

Crows Landing Site

Nestled in the Ausable River Valley, the town of Jay enjoys a unique microclimate. Sheltered by the high peaks and warmed by air from Lake Champlain, temperatures here average 8° warmer than Lake Placid, extending the growing season. Agriculture has thrived for centuries, and in 2010, we planted our first vines on a southeast-facing slope. These cold-hardy varietals have flourished, and we’re now expanding to produce world-class wines in the Adirondack High Peaks. Our first vintage from the new blocks will arrive in 2025, and we’re excited to share this journey with you.
