Grape Varieties
Grape Varieties- With such a new adventure comes many unknowns. We have chosen grapes we know well like Marquette, Frontenac Gris and La Crescent, as well as some new comers, Petite Pearl, Crimson Pearl, Itasca, Frontenac Blanc, Adalmina, and Prarie Star. While we don’t know exactly what grapes will be in which wines, we are striving to give ourself options to make a range of styles, from Dry Red, to Dry and Off Dry white, and sparkling wines. Marquette is a proven varietal for us here in Jay and will likely continue be the dominant variety.
Rootstocks- While many cold climate grape varieties are grown on their own roots, we have decided to put in some experimental rows of Marquette on the classic rootstocks, 3309, So4 and 5bb and 5C alongside own rooted vines. It will be intersting to compare the side by side rows as they develop.

Vine Training
Vertical Shoot Positioning- Most hybrid grapes are grown on top wire cordon to satisfactory conventional results, but here at Crows Landing our viticultural goals are aimed at the ultimate goal of not needing to treat the vines for disease. In our experience VSP training allows for very precise canopy management, clean renewal wood, airflow and sun exposure which makes this possible. Double catch wires allow for the canopy to be structured.
